I think it plugs into the back of the 'floating' instrument panel. You seem to have dismantled a lot of stuff there for a Pollen Filter change!

I removed the glove box. Which meant removing the panel behind the floating console. I have had a look on the rear of the instrument panel, i can't see anything.
I hope 'volvo for ever' is correct!
At the moment i have clipped it a piece of plastic and left it unplugged.

Is there not a seonsor on the back of the trim panel behind the waterfall that detects cabin temperature for the AirCon? Has a little grille over it and a tube running up into the heater matrix. Could it be this?

Yes, I think so too as the gray plug seems correct. I do not remember if there are two of them, but one is for sure located on the left hand side, just behind the ICM panel.
