Hi all
Ive seen many turbo cars fitted with dump valves and i really like sound they produce, but all the ones ive seen have been manual cars!! i have an auto t5, could i fit it with a dump valve and get the same effect??? and do you recommend fitting a dump valve to a T5 anyways?? any response would be much appreciated! kind regards Ash ps also what difference does a strut brace make to the handling?? is it a good addition to the T5?? |

Your car has a dump valve! All the Volvo turbos have one and it's a recirculating type.

the answer is maybe no, due to the fact that autos dont drop engine revs when they change gear, so you wouldn't get the pshhh noise regularly

you can fit one but its a pain in the arse to get right.
i fitted one to my 850 t5r auto and it worked great!! i bought a dv26 bailey evo piston from here: http://www.baileymotorsport.co.uk the only hard bit was blanking off the existing valve built into the turbo, i did this by bolting an aluminium plate over it. the sound it made wasn't as loud or as frequent as a manual car but it was still very good. i ran the car like this for 3 years and it never gave me any probs with ecu lights etc etc... i think don sells a kit with the blanking plate and turbo pipe all included this might be better than having to fabricate your own plate. hope this helps |

So why do you have to buy a fitting kit when you buy a dump valve??? Are you sure your not getting mixed up with the wastegate???

I can indeed supply a dump valve kit, suitable for both manual and automatic cars for £135 plus VAT delivered. The kit comprises of Forge valve, silicone top hose with spout in red or blue, blanking plate to replace the recirculating valve on your original turbo, small bore pipe, instructions etc.
I can also supply this kit together with the remaining silicone turbo hoses to make the full set in matching colour for £195 plus VAT. Regards, Don.Norchi. www.kalmar-union.com TME engineered software UK distributor. |

To Sum up
Matt- you need a fitting kit because an atmospheric dump valve tends to go in the top IC hose, IC to intake, not on the side of the turbo, so you need a hose with the DV in, or just a T-piece to cut into the hose with (Dons kits come with the entire hose assembly) Then you need to unbolt the existing Dv from the turbo, and blank off the hole left, never done it on a T5, but its a bit fiddly with a T4 (dont do it with an hours deadline, cause theres no time for it to cool down and you will burn yourself, as I did) a fitting kit comes with hoses and blanking plates, as opposed just the DV. Back to original post, There's a DV on the car as said, so if its functionality your after, theres no need to spend the cash. Though there is argument that the closer the DV is to the intake plenum the better, and an atmo is nearer it than the standard one, though it's only really applicable to very high boost cars. If it's the noise, as has also been said, you wont get it on gear changes as theres no backing off on an auto, and its the releasing of the throttle that causes the vaccuum in the intake, that causes the DV to release the pressure in the intake system, so you'll only ever get the noise on letting off the throttle, ie, much less than on a manual where you do it all the time. Physically, engine wise, theres no difference to fitting to an auto than a manual. HTH Ross

Since there is no functionality to the dump valve, you may as well fit one of the "noisemaker" DV kits that simply produce a "shhhhhhhh" noise when you change gear.
Alternatively, buy a strut brace if you haven't got one - that will REALLY produce a good result and be cheaper. |

or...
Buy both.. Then go round corners, while making cool sound! (And yes - I have an atmospheric kit on an auto and it works great!) Phil :)
