Yes you can't expect anything better when you only spend £58'000 on a car these days. In reality it does nit look bad in real life and you do not see the cut out unless you kneel down and look for it.

There is still a cut-out in the bumper when towbar is fitted at the factory but it is all very neat and I notice the edge of the cut-out is painted so I guess if you order a new rear bumper (and they come painted) you can specify one for a car fitted with a towbar??? Hope I do not need to find out!

Hi,

My Dad has just tried to lower his electric retractable towbar on his 2016 XC90 and it won't work. It worked perfectly fine last summer, when they last used it.

He said that the dash flashed up a towbar service message briefly before disappearing, but the car was serviced last month.

Does anyone know if the towbar should have been serviced at the same time as the car, and does the 'service required' message stop the towbar from working?

Thank all.

Spray some WD40 over the towbar joints, it may need a little pull as the button is pressed, it might be just lack of use over the lay up, if that does not work check the fuse.

Thanks, he'll try that.

He has also just told me that the button for the towbar usually lights up when he opens the tailgate, but it isn't lighting up now.

May be the fuse then or bad contact.

Default Towbar affects CO2 emissions and car tax

Last year I discovered that ordering a new XC90 B5 Diesel with a towbar would have increased the initial car tax because CO2 emissions would be fractionally higher. An easy saving by getting the towbar dealer fitted as the cost is the same or less.
My plan changed when I found a 5k miles used XC90 with everything I wanted except a towbar. Got a dealer to fit the towbar and they’ve done a neat job.
