Then I've often found a sub-variation where the pads are nearly correct, but differ in length by 0.5 mm. The smaller kind fit easily, but rattle. You can cut shims out of tin cans, but better is to have one of each for comparison, which is obvious when you rest them on a flat surface.
This is really good information for Volvo 200 owners.

I'd never have noticed the difference apart from the rattle if I hadn't once had a car with the narrower calipers. The new pads would almost, but not quite fit in the slot. At first I just thought it was the usual build up of rust, but after careful cleaning the pads would still not fit. It was only then that I discovered that it is, with searching, possible to find the right pads.

When I sold the car I was left with a spare set of the narrower pads, hence the idea for snipping up a baked bean tin and making a shim. It was E-shaped to fit clear of the disk, and had projecting loops bent round the locating pins to hold it in place. Apart from that one car (1991, I think) I've never come across the narrower calipers again.
