I'd never have noticed the difference apart from the rattle if I hadn't once had a car with the narrower calipers. The new pads would almost, but not quite fit in the slot. At first I just thought it was the usual build up of rust, but after careful cleaning the pads would still not fit. It was only then that I discovered that it is, with searching, possible to find the right pads.
When I sold the car I was left with a spare set of the narrower pads, hence the idea for snipping up a baked bean tin and making a shim. It was E-shaped to fit clear of the disk, and had projecting loops bent round the locating pins to hold it in place. Apart from that one car (1991, I think) I've never come across the narrower calipers again. |
