I've owned several 740s, including a very late model which was a 940 Mk1 in all but name, and two 940s ('96 and '97, the former being my current car).
In my experience, the 740s have a similar ride to a 240, soft and wallowy, comfortable but a lot of roll in corners and not exactly something that you want to hustle to beat your satnav ETA. The Mk2 940s are distinctly firmer, but handle much better for it. My '96 has only done 80k, so is very taut and handles cleanly, but my '97 had done exactly twice that and was still firmer and more crisp than any of my 700 series cars. I loved each and every one of those cars, but the 940 Mk2 is the one that's turned out to be the keeper. It's the perfect middle ground between comfort and positive handling in my opinion. I can happily do huge distances in it and arrive happy and relatively refreshed.
