'Morning, both. Alan, you've mentioned previously your surveying and electrical background, but - if I may ask - do you also have production engineering experience yourself? Speaking as a retired industrial / production engineer, I can only agree with everything that you have said in this context. I know of many companies that are either unaware of, or choose to ignore, basic I.E. techniques at their peril.

Regards, John,

Regards, John,
Good morn John,

No, I don't have any direct IE experience as such, my views are just observations from things I see and read about.

It is nice to have a subject matter expert (yourself) confirm that I have guessed about right :-)

Fuel Consumption Report:

I filled up the RB yesterday and it took 9 gallons of Morrison's very cheapest, the trip meter said 225 miles, so it continues to return exactly 25 MPG.

Everything has settled down nicely and I'm happy with that.

That's good news Alan, the most important bit is the consistency of it.

Agreed Dave - it seems regular as clockwork.

Alan

PS. I've started adding half a bottle of Reddex with each fill - mainly because Tesco is selling it for £2/bottle.It is hard to say whether there is much change as it was running pretty well before, but at £1 per 250 miles seems sensible to use it.

I have found a little bit of rust on the RB - a patch just in front of the driver's side rear wheel arch. It had been disguised with some filler and paint by a PO - some time ago I should think - and is about 2" x 1" (cut out square to some shiny stuff). I'll have a look at the panel behind as well.
Once this rain stops I'll make a proper repair and weld it in - which has given me the excuse I needed to buy a joddler :-)
This seems to be the only patch on the car, which isn't bad for a 40 year old so I don't mind that much. I'll post a few photos when I get this one sorted.
:-)

Sounds like you have a good plan of action for it though - don't forget loads of pics of the repair process!

joddler tool:~

The above is an ok tool but will probably sit in the draw for years without use- if you have a vice then that is just as good, if you can butt the joins then this can avoid the potential rust sandwich.

If you do overlap these joins then use zinc rich primer (avoid the fumes) or weld through primer & seal all seams when finished.

I have a joddler -hand operated- as new just stored away and hardly used after restoring a '54 Riley.
Good Luck
Bob.

Thank you Bob,
I have gone about 40 years fixing bats and bikes (not much bodywork on a bike) without needing a joddler - I have no idea whether I'll even use it again but it might be handy for this little job. We'll see - it wasn't expensive :-)

The above should have said 'cars and bikes' and not 'bats and bikes' - although I have fixed a few cricket bats that was not my intention (I'm blaming this on the spelling checker).
