Wheel arch trim is removed along with the bumper, they are fitted at the dealers. Not at the factory

To be clear though, you can order the Volvo swing tow bar to be fitted at the factory on the production line if ordering a new Volvo, they do not have to be fitted afterwards by the dealer (on an xc90 fitting seems very invasive if fitted post production and there would be the possibility of panel mis-fits/rattles/damage etc.) This was possible from Jan 18.

My towbar was a new car option but it was fitted at the dealership after delivery and before I picked it up, if they were fitted in the factory while being built you would expect to have a purpose built rear bumper instead of them being cut to accommodate the towbar.

So was ours, car was built in may 2018 and deliverd in june. I know
it wasn't factory fit since we needed the car immediately, the tow
bar was installed after we returned from holiday.

Got a retractable towbar on mine as well, could you take a picture of the bumper with the cutout?

The first 3 shots looking at the towbar and cutout as you normally see it, the last 2 shots from below, there is a sizeable chunk of bumper removed to allow the towbar to swing.
If you get down and look under your bumper you will notice the cutout.

I mean no disrespect, but the dealer seems to have used a chainsaw on that cutout. From what I can tell, no filing has been done to clean it up either.

I had one fitted on my XC60 for the just same reason, a bike carrier, from memory the dealer did mine for around £950.
