Welcome,

Firstly it is necessary to know what oem cluster you have. If it's a 1989 740 GL (saloon) or even an estate (745) it is likely to be made by VDO rather than Yazaki. Put up a picture of the front for starters.

Complete jumping the gun here but just watch out putting it all back together, make sure your battery light comes on with the ignition (not engine start) as I think there is a little lead which can come off on re-installation and then your alternator won't work.

It took me and a few friends quite a number of hours in the dark in January in a Tesco car park debugging that one.

First question is does your speedo and rev counter (tachometer) still work?

Next is what are your soldering skills like and can you post a photo of the PCB side as well as the front?

Please sir, isn't the engine in your new toy 90 degrees out of alignment?

I haven't experienced anything wrong with the engine or drive. I guess it must have been put in at the factory that way. Maybe it was a Friday!.

Compared with the old 2ltr Bosch LH2.4 manual on the 745 the 'toy' is a delight to drive. Sink into the full leathers, adjust the electric seat and steering column to suit, into drive and we are off with turbo charged power in aircon luxury. Of course, not forgetting to release the handbrake. On the motorway just flick in the cruise control. Oh yes, as you get older this is my kind of driving sod which way round the mechanicals are!!

My big problem is you can't drive two cars at once, but how do you just dump a 30 year old car you have had since new!

Cheers all, Bob

Yes Dave, it's a V70 T5 CD Auto with the B5234 T3 engine (5 cylinder 20 valve jobby). I guess it will be fine until the electrics start to play up and then i'll need the 745!!
