Regarding the VO 11998 which is the part number for the rear axle drain plug washer.
Is it the same washer as the one used for the oil filter? [I ask because sometimes the oil filter suppliers I use include a washer. Sometimes it is copper and sometimes it is made from a white alloy. Don't know why they are different and never thought to ask either. I don't have any at the moment although I do have two oil filters in store. Just thought I might order a small batch of washers for the filters if they are the correct washer to use.] Thank you. |

Checked again 11998 is engine sump plug washer. 947624 is diff drain plug on early cars. 957181 is diff fill plug washer on later cars where it drains out through bottom casing bolt ( like yours I think )
Different part numbers but it doesn't give you sizes,so the could be the same Hope that makes sense Cheers Mark

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your post. The catalogue I have suggests my rear axle is the one below. See attachment. I include a couple of photos too. In the photos the bolts on the inspection cover appear in both photos which hopefully makes it possible to navigate between the two. Item 10 on the catalogue picture is the ‘gasket’ and the catalogue suggests 11998-2. Which is also the gasket for the oil sump. The drain seems to be on the underside. Gasket measurement are as follows, outer diameter, inner diameter, thickness, all in mm. 947624 is 21.7 18.3 1.5. 957181 is 21.9 18.2 1.5. 11998 is 23.9 18.5 1.5 Oddly the catalogue I have does not depict a washer/gasket for the oil filter 3517857. I generally use the washer that comes with the oil filter but maybe one should not use them? Gasket/washer measurements sourced from SLP.SE https://slp.se/en/specifications/volvo/11998 |

It all makes sense now. I thought you had the later diff that drains through the bottom bolt on the casing. Going by your photos you have the earlier diff ( like Scoobs )
The fill hole may not need a washer as the level always sits below it.

You should always use the new rubber gasket on the new oil filter, the smup drain plug will have a crush washer (aluminium or copper) or if someone has improved it, a Dowty Seal type washer. Quote:
Check the supercessions on the 760 drain plug washer Mark! Fairly certain you'll find a supercession to the later 11998-2 part number.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your message. I am pretty sure we are both looking at the same catalogue. The difference is I'm looking at page 719 whereas you are looking at page 711. |

What is page 719 headed as? Page 711 is headed as something along the lines of 760 Rear Axle 1990
