Default T4 engine swap

Hello,

I have Volvo S40 T4 (2001 model) with broken B4204T5 engine. I also have S40 T4 (2000 model) with B4192T2 engine (cranky car with working engine). Looks like it's not a big problem to swap older B4192T2 to newer car if I also swap ECU, ignition and door locks. Am I right?

There seems to be at least two versions of B4192T2, older without MAP sensor and newer with MAP sensor. My car has MAP sensor. VIN code YV1VS2422YF511380. The car with broken engine has VIN YV1VS37691F672715.

There is one major difference between cars: The older one has manual transmission and newer one has automatic transmission. Will this be a problem? I want to keep automatic transmission.

I appreciate any comments that more experienced people on the subject could have, thank you.

I've looked into this. I've got a decent chassis (1600 manual), and a rusty T4 (auto) which drives beautifully. I put a battery on it today, and after sitting for six months it started in under half a second of turning the key.

At the least, you'll need to change the engine wiring loom for the engine management, and although i've not actually checked, i'm fairly certain it'd be easier to change the ENTIRE loom than try to tease out the relevant wires. The path the wires take from engine to cabin is via an aperture behind the drivers side of the dashboard, through the wing right up in the corner where it takes a ninety degree turn - along with a ton of other wires to get tangled with. You're just not gonna be able to reach up and poke it through, it'll be a real ordeal.

This will mean removing most of the interior, including the dashboard. You might be able to get away with leaving some bits in place, the rear for example, maybe the doors.

It will be a very long job, I think, and it's why I've abandoned the idea completely. I wish you the very best of luck.

There are 3 versions of the the t4 engine. B4194T, B4194T2 and B4204T5
The B4194T is the one that is very different, when it comes to MA sensor, MAF sensor, coil packs and wiring in general. The B4194T2 and B4204T5 are a lot more similar when it comes to wiring sensors etc and the main difference is that one is 1855cc and the newer one is 1948cc.

You will definitely have to swap over the ECU lockset (ECU, immobiliser, and all locks). You will then have to compare the wiring looms between the two cars and see if they are the same. If not, then you will also have to replace the engine bay wiring loom and possibly the wiring loom under the dashboard.
