So the speedo is all OK, well that's a miracle ... never get rid of a working VDO one as is like hen's teeth!!

If the two gauges just flicker anywhere and give random readings I would first remove the cluster and clean up the muliplugs and their sockets.

If no result the the solder joints on the small pcb's behind the gauges on both can be problematic on VDO's (more so the fuel gauge) after all this length of time. You can take them out to inspect/do the job. A suspect sender in the fuel tank is also a possibility you can check the signal. I would also check that the temp.sender on the engine block is OK.

Sorry about that, have not been following...
Lakes Wyboston close to St Neots, the last Volvo breakers. If you do a search here you will find a phone no and mobiles for Barry /Bernard.
There are a few 740's around and a fair selection of 940 clusters last time I asked.
