Exclamation XC90 D5 Engine Oil Capacity

Hi, I have a query on my XC90 D5 AWD regarding engine oil capacity.

The car recently had a full service by a local mechanic. When I checked the oil level a few days later (I do this sort of thing!), the oil level was just on the MIN. The engine was cold and vehicle on level ground.

According to the Manual the engine oil capacity is 6.2 ltr.

The Manual also states there is a 2 ltr difference between the MIN & MAX marks on the dipstick (I'm sure that's how I read it).

My question is, should the 6.2 ltr be sufficient to fill up to the MAX mark?

When questioning the mechanic, he said that he put the correct type and amount of oil in according to the manufactures specification. But I wasn't happy.

The XC90 is not dripping or burning oil.

I was told it is 5.7 litres. In any case that is what was put in my car and it was right at the top of the dipstick.

My car burns a lot of oil (2 litres in 500 miles!) so I top up more or less every week. 2 litres gets me from the bottom to the top of the dipstick.

D5 engines should not be filled to the top of the marks on the dipstick, 1/2 way between or to 3 sets of XXX from the full marker. .... Engine will throw an error if filled to the top. Plenty of threads about this on the forums, have a search.

Also check what the owners manual says .... if you don't have one you can download from Volvo's web site.

Hope it helps

What D5 are we talking about?

Euro 3 can be filled to max. B4 spec.
Euro 4 to 2/3 to avoid additional overfill from fuel dilution. B5 spec.

Crumbs, you burning/leaking that much oil? On all three D5's I've owned have perhaps needed one top up between 12,000 mile services. I think I've still got the same 1 litre bottle of oil that lasted over 200,000 miles.

I checked my oil level tonight and it had exactly 3 XXXs showing on the dipstick

So I am happy

Yes, 2 litres every five hundred miles!

Its the 185 engine, top it right to the top every week. No danger of it overfilling at the rate it's burning it off!
