I'm still in early stages of planning re the radi/player o so I know nothing. Except. Are your speaker wires connected to a Volvo supplied amplifier which might well not be connected to the Halfords harness? If so bypass the amplifier. Connect the speakers direct to the radio/player, probably via the harness.

What connector was on the back of your tape deck? Was it a long thin kind of thing?

What adapter kit did you buy from Halfords? I have just pulled my stereo to upgrade as well, as I only have front speakers it might do well.
