From 17" wheels to 16" wheels
Hi all
I've had enough of the sometimes jarring ride from the standard 17" wheels on my 2007 S60 (fitted with 225 45 17 tyres with 6mm plus of tread, around 34psi). Will the 16" wheels from earlier Volvos fit? I can then fit higher profile tyres for greater comfort. |

I have a 2003 V70 with Amalthea 17" wheels. I bought a set of Sirius 16" with winter tyres on which fit perfectly. Looking on the Volvo accessories web page, it states that these wheels are for 2004 onwards, so probably will fit yours. (mine must be a 2003 registered 2004 model car?)

I would try 36 psi all round first though and see how that feels.

P1 & P2 16" wheels are interchangeable, but P3 are not. Whatever tyres you fit, try to retain same rolling circumference as the 17" ones so as to avoid problems with speedo calibration & use of spare wheel.

Check the disk diameter.
Afaik the 286mm fits all 16" but the 305mm may not fit some. |

Thanks for the quick replies, I'll look for some 16" wheels.
205 55 16 looks similar for radius, to ensure speedo accuracy https://tiresize.com/comparison/ although the handbook that's hiding in the car somewhere will give me a clue |

My V70 came with 17s and they are just horrible and they tramline, so I bought some genuine used 16s and put some new Pirelli P7s on and they are just delightful.
I can't recommend it enough.

My V70 came with 18" wheels, which are an absolute joke on the roads we have around here these days. I've changed to 17" wheels which are a huge improvement. But, the secondhand 17" wheels I bought, came from someone who was changing his car to 16" wheels.
There seems to be a noticeable trend going on here that perhaps Volvo (and other manufacturers) would do well to note.

I suspect the problem stems from the fact that the S60 suspension was designed for 16 inch wheels from the outset with 17 inch being fitted for styling purposes only. Despite me fitting new Bilstein shocks the ride on my car is still terrible. It has improved with the fitting of Meyle HD anti roll bar links, at least a lot of the rattling when going over bumps has disappeared but it still isn't as good as I would expect.
Genuine used 16 inch wheels are few and far between over here otherwise I would have changed them long ago. Tyres seem to make a massive difference as well. When I first got the car it had cheapo snow tyres fitted. I changed them to my favourite mid price tyres that I have fitted on cars for many years without a problem. They lasted a year as the ride was so bad! Changed them for some much softer budget tyres that improved the ride quite a bit. But the tyres are still far too thin sidewall wise. Also experimented with different tyre pressures without much of a difference.

They ride so smooth on 16's!
Avoid cheap XL rated tyres too. |
