To quote a pal "one gear is the selector all gears are the clutch anything else means replace the box" I know it is a generalisation but it is usually quite good.

IT may sound starnge but change the oil first , go to the dealer and get a genuine can, its expensive because its fully synthetic, about £40 but this did cure your symptoms for me on 2 occasions on different 400 series cars , maybe water gets in the oil and affects the syncromesh ...

You can also try to thoroughly spray the gear linkage under your car with WD-40 or something similar. The joints at the gear linkage has plastic bushes (if thats the right word, english is not my native language) in it, they wear out after some time, and gather rust and dirt in it.
If that doesn;t help: these plastic thingies are easily replaced. They cost very little and are available from the Volvo-dealer. Spraying these joints helped to improve selecting gear a lot; in my case (same problem with 1st and 2nd gear) more than changing gear-oil. |

having had this one three volvos (two 440s and one V40 with the same g/box as the 400) if you find two pairs of gears eg 1st and 2nd are tough it is most likely your gear linkage needs adjustment. The car is front wheel drive and so the engine/gearbox rocks on their mounts as you accelerate etc. the selector rod from the gear stick to the g/box is adjustable.
how is reverse? usually 1st, 2nd and reverse are all tough! does 5th seem nearer the middle than before?? S |

Gears
Hi Shimon,
This is weird but from day one ( as in, 7 yrs. old and 77k. miles ) my 440 used to be sticky at times on 2nd. when turning right sharply on deceleration. Obviously a quirk, 'cause it did almost the same mileage all over again in the following 7 years .... Cheers, Anthony. |
