It looks like an atmospheric pressure sensor - it helps the engine ECU compensate for changes in altitude and weather conditions, altitude being the prevalent consideration of course.

I think that it's simply a blanking plug, covering a connector on the loom which is not used.

I have the identical thing but down inside the front left wheel arch, blanking out the connection point for the parking heater (not fitted ).

Easiest thing to do would be to find the relevant circuit diagram for the car in question, identify the wire colour codes then confirm the conector location by cross-referening the diagrams and work it out from there.

It could be any of the above including control for the parking heater but i seriously doubt it just caps off an unsued section of loom - there must be a purpose for that part of the loom or the bean-counters would have ensured Volvo deleted it.

Whether that purose applies to the UK or not is a different matter........................

Blanking plug for unused connector

The costs of just-in-time manufacturing and holding inventory for every possible loom configuration required for every permutation of standard and dealer-specified equipment would considerably outweigh the cost of adding a few pennies' worth (at the volume of production we're talking about here) of cable and connectors that won't be used in all of them.

Which is why if you look, you'll find a few unused connectors in most vehicles. this is just one of them.

I was thinking "unused" as in not used across the world, not unused in the UK market so i get what you're saying and agree.
