Central locking and windscreen washers

My 2009 V70 has been parked up for a good few weeks. Today whilst it started first turn of the key, I noticed that I have no water from windscreen washers (front or back) although headlamp washer is working. Checked fuse under glove box and not that. Likewise water tank is full. Also found that whilst drivers door unlocks on remote it will not lock and rear passenger door on drivers side will not unlock or lock. When opening door from inside, pin immediately goes back down into door. Are these likely to be related?

So I’ve had the washer pump replaced and been told I also need new washer jets. The ones I have are heated. Can these be replaced with normal ones? Until I can thoroughly clean the heated ones? Are they easy to remove? Booked in tomorrow to hopefully get central locking issues sorted

Is it Volvo dealer or Volvo specialist you are using? I ask as there is a plastic gauze filter that blocks with sludge in the bottle which will have needed cleaning. Simply replacing the pump will not alleviate your issues. The fact you have nothing to the rear jet neither, suggests the filter is blocked and/or the bottle and pipes are sludged up.

Common fault is corrosion inside the individual door motor bodies as well as seized/burnt out motors.

If you search either topic there are plenty of results to guide you or your garage if they aren't a Volvo trained workshop.

Ok so central locking issues now solved by the fitting of a new battery having consulted an auto electrician. Wiper nozzles now soaking in vinegar. Hopefully alongside the fitting of a new washer pump, this will resolve my washer issues and back to adding to the 145k on the clock!!!

As said above. Check gauze filter in washer bottle as they get blocked so fitting a new pump won't cure it

It’s not the bottle as I have a strong flow through the pipes and check valves. Definitely the jets, hence why now soaking in vinegar

Good call on the vinegar. In the past I have also used Coca Cola for the same job.

I wonder if one of those kettle/iron descaler solutions would be any good?


're your central locking, are you saying that the main 12v battery was the causant of the systems malfunction, i.e. not enough power?

Well the vinegar didn’t work. Jets still blocked. So new ones ordered. On the central locking front, yes it was the main battery. Wasn’t giving enough power to the doors. New battery and doors once again locking and unlocking properly.

Vinegar and other mild acids clear blockages if those blockages are caused my calcium in hard water. Depending on what water you use for the washer reservoir hard water deposits can be to blame and mild acid will do the job. However a lot of contamination in washer lines is organic material even though the additive should stop biological activity in the lines. Microbes somehow always seem to find a way to survive and when they do die they form a sludge which is not easily removable with acid.

Once you have your replacement jets, don't throw away the old ones which apart from the sludge blockage are probably cleanable and reusable. Hot water and a fine wire "pull through" may well enable you to dislodge the sludge and soaking in a caustic solution such as dish washer detergent may clear the residue once you have any flow through the jet. I wonder if the fact that the jet is heated may accelerate the deposit of sludge and scale.
