Default Gravelly/Grinding noise

Hi all,

I've recently noticed what I can only describe as a 'gravelly' noise coming from the engine. It's happens at low revs/speeds, and mainly when a little throttle is applied. The noise seems to go away when off throttle/braking.

No warning lights. No noticeable effects on driving, car is pulling fine, box is changing gears fine, no hesitating, literally the only symptom is the noise.

Thought it was only doing it when cold, but noticed it was still there even when warm this morning.

Hard one to diagnose. I will get the car on the ramp and inspect for anything loose, but just wondered if anyone might have any ideas? Engine mounts possibly?

Car is on 116k fyi.

Any help is much appreciated.

The Volvo XC70 D5 combines the new D5 diesel engine and electronically controlled all-wheel drive.
I couldn't even imagine on this one.

Do you happen to know anyone who has Vida in East Anglia?

Either that, or perhaps get a Veepeak OBD2 ready (£30th Amazon) and get the Car Scanner Pro app (not sure how much that cost me).

Anything to read outputs or errors that don’t show on the dash.

The fact it’s pulling as it should do (and no smoke?) makes me think it might be something belt driven? Alternator or AC compressor related?

Does it start up ok when cold and/or hot? And does it happen when you increase revs in neutral. Or just when you’re in gear?

It would have had the cam and Aux belts and tensioners replaced in the last 2 years I guess. This is something where someone experienced needs to be there to hear and locate it. don't ignore it though!

I'm in north Suffolk - near Diss - and I have VIDA. Somewhere...

Also, check the alternator freewheel pulley.

And check the belts for vibration.

I'm down near the South Coast now...but Dereham's not too far from my "Motherland" (ie flatlands of East Anglia :-) ). Still frequently visit for work purposes.
