Can you describe the noise you think it would make? I always find describing noises on the internet very subjective

I'd say :

- hit pedal, light clonk from front, take foot off, slight clunk, put foot on, light clunk....

....in fact, this might be different, as if foot is lightly on pedal, it might clunk on/off if you get my drift - almost sounds like something is turning on/off....

The car is not moving so don't think would be gearbox or anything (I hope!)
..it's not an auto box interlock solenoid somewhere is it ??. Isn't there a brake pedal circuit connection to the gear lever mechanism ? or is that under the transmission tunnel by the linkage (don't know - mine's a manual)

Drop links will also rattle/knock with suspension travel and no brake applied.

Mine sounds like the brake pad is moving in the caliper when you touch the brake pedal - it is driving me crazy but again can't seem to replicate it in the garage or induce any movement in the caliper.
I've had new drop links and wishbones fitted quite recently and all is now quiet on the bumps and potholes.
Is it possible for anything in the suspension strut to flex enough to make this sort of noise (it's not the spring for sure - could it be the shock piston ?) - or should I try slathering the pad with copper slip first ?..driving me nuts..

Cheers

Same thing for me (on a March 2006 55plate) except for the N/side front; sometimes think that it's about to fall to bits! Again I can't find anything obvious (i.e. loose) when the wheel is off, but then I'm an electronics engineer not a mechanical one...

Maybe time to 'bite the bullet' and take it to the dealer (MRG in Chippenham), have been using 'Swindon Volvo' @ Shrivenham - good indy but not passing that way for a while.

If its a clonk, then I cant help.

If its a click, then have you got Volvo brakes?

I opted last year for new front discs & pads from National - £220 as opposed to £500 everywhere else - but not Volvo parts.

I got a click sometimes when I brake - after revisiting National, they fitted Volvo pads and that cured it for a while, but back again - it is the pads just not fitting quite properly and moving on braking - nothing serious I was assured by 2 parties.

..yes definitely Volvo parts (FRF) - discs and pads changed last year. But now you mention it it has only really been since then. I'll try the lathering with copper slip route.

Cheers

OK....got in the car tonight to take a look. Tried it with the ignition at first stop - ie only radio etc on. Pumped the brake pedal, and there's a sort of light clunk every time brake lights go on/off. Is this normal???? Does everyone's do this??

ie, like a big relay/solenoid.......

There is a solenoid that releases the gear lever which will make a noise when you press the peddle.

i'd agree with this, though not necessarily your porblem.
as we reverse off the drive onto the road and then brake before going forwards, i sometimes get a slight, light clunk as the pads are drawn the opposite way in the callipers. were takling a miniscule amount of movement of the pads in the calliper as there non genuine volvo pads.

then drive away and the same is repeated on the first brake when moving forwards as the pad is drawn back to the other side of its 'play'.

not too fussed. if anything t should help the pads not get corroded into positionin the caliper and start sticking (like i found when changing my dads audi discs & pads the other nite!)
