850 SE Auto wont start again for 5 to 10 minutes
I have had this reoccurring problem with my Volvo for about 18 months. It is a 850 SE Auto petrol. The car starts fine when it is cold but if you stop and turn off the engine it will not start again for about 5 to 10 minutes. The engine turns over, starts and then immediately dies. I then have to leave it for the required 5 to 10 minutes and it starts again fine. I have had it in the Volvo dealer several times but they can never find the problem. I just had the petrol filter replaced in hope but the problem still persists. Has anyone suffered from the same issue or have an ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks Nick |

1 , fuel pressure not held for at least 20 mins when you turn off , if the pressure drains away the fuel boils in the line and causes air locks . a new pump or pressure regulator if this is happening . 2, the fuel pump relay is faulty , affected by heat , a new one after all this time is a good thing anyway ...

Hi,
Try having a look at this thread. http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...ppets+starting And also, I think it was NI_VolvoNut who recommended a few years ago the following... "Try removing the fuel pump fuse, then crank it til it starts, then re-fix the fuse when it's running" He said something like that anyway...Was that right NI_VolvoNut? MB4 |

Most of the posters on that linked thread seemed to be suffering from flooded engines (flooded spark plugs more specifically).
If you switch off within a couple of minutes of start up, you too could be flooding her up. Do you have a distributor affair on this car? They are subsceptible to moisture ingress and general detiroation, the rotor, and the cap. If it's only once warm that it wont restart, you need to determine if you've lost spark or fuel for the duration of the non start period. |

I'd replace the engine temp sensor.
Sounds like a warm start issue to me. |

Thanks All for the advice. I will start off with the easy stuff and let you know where I get to. I was reading a post with 269 entries on 850 starter issues which is very similar to mine. The issue turned out to be the immboliser on the car, unfortunately mine doesnt have one that I am ware of.

It could also be the coolant temperature sensor. If it reports to the engine management "cold" and the motor is hot the engine will send too mucht fuel making the start impossible.
Where does the needle from the coolant temperature stand when this occurs? Regards Cristian |

When the fuel pump relais is broken the car also stops out of the blue.
The immobilizer is fitted in all cars MY96 and upwards, the prior models have the immobilizer with the pin keys. |
