Default 12v Power Socket

I'm not really good with wiring in cars - just never bothered learning and don't think the XC90 is a good starting point!
I've just had a Dension 500 fitted for iPod which is powered and great (despite Bluetooth not working!). I also have a TomTom iPhone cradle which I'm going to use for Handsfree (for now) but it needs powering via Cigar Lighter but I don't like wires hanging everywhere looking messy.
Instead of hardwiring anything to the battery, I want to know if I can just remove the 12V socket from the dash trim and "hide" it in the space behind with the charger plugged in, running the other end of the wire out the gap between dash & radio head unit, then fill the resulting hole with the 12v socket cap.
Does the socket come away from trim and is there any problems with doing the above??
Thanks

I'd probably just leave the original power point where it is and run in a new one to where you want the power, warning though... disconnect the battery and use the wires from the power point exactly as they are wired on that one. These are not really cars for the DIYer when it comes to the electrics, so you may be best getting a professional for this, it may cost a few quid extra, but if a mistake is made you will end up at Volvo having codes reset and they will take sixty quid off you for the pleasure. Good luck.

When I bought my 90, I did a deal with dealer to get the Garmin sat nav unit fitted that they do as an 'extra' for those cars not fitted with the full nav system. The loom kit it comes with gets power at the back of the stereo area, from the cigarette lighter and powers the nav when the car is running. You might be able to get that bit of loom and loop off the lighter supply without any loom butchering and get a nice simple removable solution. See FRF about this piece of optional loom and whilst it might be a bit pricey it might be beneficial if you are being fussy about a nice neat finish. Because I only have the high performance stereo and not the super-duper version, the speaker grille in the centre of the dash is empty and there is a lod of rommunder for wiring room. Pop it out gently using a flat kitchen knife.

Thanks

Possibly had a different idea to use the socket on rear of centre console and run the wire under that trim. Leaves front one free too.

Out of sight out of mind and saves taking too much of the car to bits cos you know I WILL BREAK SOMETHING!!!

i just plugged a 1 into 3 adaptor into my rear centre console (behind the fridge), and ran the extension lead discretely under the passenger seat. from the i've got 1 pair of tv's to the seat headrests, radar detector which goes up under the centre gearstick console behind the dash to the windscreen, and phone charger to the glove box.

you can't see any wiring except for the plug in the 12v socket in the 2nd row.

and all easily removable.

i think the 3 into 1 lead was a maplin job (good quality at about £10-15).
