There are some genuine volvo aluminium aero bars, i have them on mine and they fit between the rails.
They come up on ebay fairly regularly:

Half tempted to sell mine at that price, they came with the car and i only leave them on for aesthetics!

I have the volvo thule alu ones too.

Great bits of kit. SO well made and easy to use. Most roof racks will add to the drag of a vehicles aerodynamics but these are shaped to minimise this.

Well worth everypenny.

Do yourself a favour & go for these 'Aero bars' you talk about. I chose between them & the standard square Volvo ones & went for the cheap option...big mistake! They howl at anything above 50mph. To be fair, I wasn't sure my box would bend enough to fit the curve on the aero's.

Another top tip is to check out the prices via Simon (Rufe) at FRF - check out the members discounts link, likely cheaper than your local 'stealer' !

and probably cheaper than Ebay too. I bought mine new from the local 'stealer' for the price of these ebay ones.
