Snow tyres....
Given the 'snow all day' forecast tomorrow I decided to fit my snow tyres....I had a suspicion that they would not help traction when stacked up in the garage! I must say, in snow, the difference is night and day;it's hard to believe they can be that good!

Winter tires are the best idea. Sure you have to pay for a second set of wheels but used it's not that much - having them installed on their wheels is the cheapest way to go. Buying winter tires is actually not more expensive than running all weather all year long. A set of all weather used all year long will last say 4 years. Two sets - one winter one summer - will last 8 years. So the money it's the same but the safety and pleasure driving in winter are just on another level.

Winter tyres have a MUCH lower Tg (Glass Transition Temperature) so they don’t literally freeze solid. They are also significantly more compliant both structurally and in compound. Plus they have a pattern that’s good at ejecting snow (circumferential grooves are easily the most effective at shifting standing water...).
I’ve had a set of CR28 Sports on my old Honda that when it froze, the car would just slide just pushing it by hand. Get your coat out the car, slam the door, and would start to creep away.) |

Winter Tyres & Wheels
Like others I managed to get my winter wheels and tyres fitted just in time for the blizzard yesterday , so I had a safe and easy trip to the M-i-L's care home, with others sliding around all over the place.
I am still amazed how much better the ride quality is on the 205/55 x 16 winter tyres on steel wheels compared to the 225/45 x 17 s on alloys. I would go back to 16s for the summer , but the insurance company baulked at the "modification" to standard specification.

I stumbled upon a guy selling a set of mounted Norwegian snows on Volvo steels (pn 9173122) WITH Volvo hubcaps (pn 30714561). $200.
They are 215-55-16 but the bit of additional width is manageable. The difference in grip is absolutely night and day. On many roads in the western states vehicles without snow tires are banned during and after a snowfall. Such bans in the East are episodic. |
