Default 2005 Volvo V70 2.4 D5 AWD WONT START!

Hi,
I'm new to forums and have turned here for any advice I can get.
I have a V70 D5 AWD 2005 I brought the car with a supposed ceased starter motor,
I have since replaced the ceased starter for a good second hand one, still no crank.
I get a message on the dash saying start prevent.
I take the car to a local specialist and was told CEM dead and to scrap the car.
I decided to get a second opinion and had the codes read by a basic machine, they are as follows:
CEM-6C48
CEM-1A62
CEM-3F82
CEM-6C42
CEM-6C44
CEM-3F84
CEM-1A64
CEM-DD51
CEM-DD52
CEM-4A33
CEM-4A37
CEM-DD30
CEM-DF13
Please can anyone tell me, is she dead? I did send the CEM and REM off to BBA Reman for diagnosis and refurb but, they said their was nothing wrong with either the CEM or REM. I'm so confused...
I have Googled as much info as possible tried locking and unlocking doors 5 times, tried disconnecting battery and connecting it with key in position 2 tried switching ignition on and off 5 times and pressing lock button. Nothing will get her to crank.
I costs a fortune to keep having the car moved on a low loader to and from garages especially when I'm not getting anywhere.
I really want to save her from scrap.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thankyou in advance.

Hello Vince.

I don't know if this helps as I've been trying to locate an intermittent electrical fault so far without success, but some of those codes point to missing signals from various modules, engine control, differential control, wiper signal, steering angle sensor and immobiliser. There is also code for the fuel level sender. Often when there are so many missing signals the CEM is failing as it is the talk point between all the modules. The CEM is prone to water damage due to its location, pull it out and have a look for water damage. They can usually be repaired at a fraction of the cost of a new one. I can from experience recommend Lukas at a Volvo diagnostics. The other common issue is the DEM differential module.

My course of action would be to remove and clean the alternator/starter cables and earth cables in the engine bay even get the alternator checked. The earth cable that runs under the front of the motor can get water damaged.

Can you get anyone local with Volvo's diagnostic program to read the CEM. There's a map of friendly folk who might take a look for you in the General section. BTW Do any of the electrics work with key in position II? Is the battery in good health?

Hope you get it going.
Matt

Hi,
Thanks for your response, I have taken the CEM and REM out and sent them off for a refurb. The company BBA Reman sent them back with a clean bill of health (nothing wrong with them) I was told. All electronics function as they should lights, wipers, stereo, seats Etc. It just doesn't crank. A friend recommended immobilizer fault.
I will check what you have recommended as I have nothing to loose. It's just so odd that I get a click from the boot area when I turn the ignition and nothing. I have also checked the shifter, it reads from P through D on the dash and the gear stick pannel thingy.
Where can I find this map of people with diagnostic equipment please?
Thanks for your help and I will keep this thread going even if it does lead to a trip to the junk yard.

Did you disconnect the battery when removing/replacing the CEM?

Hi,
Yes battery was disconnected before any disconnections took place.
And key was in position 2 when reconnected.
I brought it as a non runner and was informed it was just the starter motor. I checked the starter before I brought it and it was ceased solid. I replaced it and I discover there is more than met the eye when still it didn't crank ( the old starter was definitely ceased). I don't know what the previous owner did or didn't do with this poor old gal
I can only go by BBA Reman telling me the CEM and REM are OK and me connecting the battery after they were reinstalled with key in position 2.
Is that the correct procedure?

Are you getting a voltage at the starter motor (control and/or the main cable) when you try and start it?

Out of interest, can you 'force' the starter motor to operate by shorting out the contactor main contacts (in-coming live to the output cable of the contactor to the starter motor) to get the engine to turn over while the key is in the run position to see if it will actually run without doing any damage to the car electrics?

It is something you do on the older pre electronic everything style car. Not sure if you would get away with it these days though.

Hi,
No power at the starter but, yes can force starter to operate and turn over engine, Won't fire tho.
Tried bypassing relay too but no go.
It's a real head scratcher.

Default Battery health

I know that this is an obvious one but have you checked that the main battery voltage is holding up OK? If in good health you should see over 12V with everything off (12.6V open-circuit is normal). If the terminal voltage falls below 12V with the key in I or II then it is weak. Obviously the voltage will be much lower whilst cranking.
Mentioning this, as you mentioned that the existing starter was seized, and a low cranking voltage (when the car last ran) may have stored multiple fault codes.

If it was only the starter motor at fault and it's a manual transmission, you could have bump started it.

Diagnostics/live data are the minimum required here I'd say, preferably Volvo diagnostics.
The rail pressure during cranking will also shed more light on what's happening, or not.
