Thanks again Bob.

How are you on ftp transfers? I could sedt up a used supplied manuals section on my Save Old Cars site. That would provide a permanent record for any other members to access. I guess I ought to check copyright restrictions before I do this though.

Yes, have heard of ftp transfer but never done one or set up account. I happy to send it to you as an attachment via email if you send me address and leave you to do whatever you may want with it.

I originally found it years ago now on the internet when I was fixing a head unit where I do not now recall.

I set up a temp email address in Thunderbird. I can't remember if I dissbled attachments though. If so, then I may have to ask you to resend - sorry about that. The address is convoy@roamerwifi.com I'll leave it active for 48 hours, and then I'll blackhole it to frustrate the spam harvesters.

Thay was quick.

I've received the pdf, and I'll create a manual submission library on https://saveoldcars.com/ .
I'll see if I can find a CMS for it, and if I can find a good one, I'll start filling a library for members here to use. I'm quite passionate about saving classic cars, and reducing the number of environmentally damaging electric vehicles and other modern cars with about 3 years of life in them,

I've restricted access to the email addy now, so spammers needent bother to send their rubbish mail.

Once again, thanks to Bob for all his help.

The manual was really helpful, and it looks as if there is a small bulb that is fairly easy to access, and this is probably the light for the screen. I'll have a go at replacing it, and see if I can find the release code while the radio is out of the car. I may try a different Volvo parts store to get the code. The one I phoned gave me a number starting with "00" first, and there is no "0" in the code.

Now I need to find a wire coat hanger.

Assuming the head unit is not original ..... if as I think likely the original was a CR-702 that only has a 4 digit code set as originally indicated in this thread by I think it was Luke. Try FRF for a code.

Also, the back light on the CR-702 was dimmable via the cluster dimmer. It might be that if the head unit is not original that the correct connections may not have been made or not possible. Pulling the head unit will hopefully resolve some of your issues.

That's all I can add to this matter.

I've had to puut this on the back burner for the moment. Apart from all the other things going on inmy life, I've got a problem with the battery, the towing electric connector needs replacing, and the engine is idling too fast. I think severa of the problems may be the result of bad earthing. After all the vehicle may be in good condition, but it is 34 years old.

One thing that may give credence to your theory that it is not the original radio is the presence of a couple of small microphones on either side of the windscreen. There is also a plastic clip that looks as if it may have contained a mobile phone. The original owner may have changed the radio to allow him to use the speakers with his phone. I've got a big box of invoices, and maybe I should go through that to see if there is a bill for a replacement radio

I will pull the radio out, but first I need to find a wire coat hanger. Given that the sock is the larval form of the coat hanger, I can't believe that I can't find one.

You may find the two “microphones” aren’t connected to the radio. They could be ultrasonic sensors for a dealer-fit alarm. Something like the ones pictured. If this is the case there will be a control box under the dash somewhere and possibly other remains of the system such as siren boxes.
