the wheel base was made longer and some other suspension components altered to improve handling from MY2001 and from MY2003 supposedly the seats were slightly altered to improve comfort(i couldnt tell the difference but i havn't been in an 03 and straight into 01 in same day so could be). as said there have been a few cosmetic changes since 1996 inside and out, these mainly happened in both model years mentioned

Model Change
I had a 1999 V reg 1.6 xs and the seats were not so great, I now have a 1.8 Sport on a 2001 51 reg and the seats are much better and a lot more comfortable. So I guess Volvo used different seats for the different models as the change from the S1 to the S2.

Yep would agree . I had an S reg Series 1 v40 2.0T last year and the wife thought it wasn't very comfortable and the seats werent very supportive.. Now on a Series 2 52 plate T4 and its better, more supportive and comfortable .. less of an old sofa ( it had done a hard 130,000 miles on the clock )

seats are definately different, if you have driven a P2 (2001MY onwards) you would never want a P1, the improvements make a vast difference, although they look almost the same, with only minor cosmetic changes, there were major changes, especially auto (5 speed adaptive is way better than 4 speed in pre 2001MY), seats are different (far firmer/supportive)
I was looking end of last year for any V40 but after taking advice and test driving both P1 and P2, I hung out for a P2, which I got at a very reasonable price |
