Default Advice on changing Altenator Belt......???

Have posted a while back about my belt screeching, i have now had a chance to look at it, and it s indeed as suggested full of cracks, so i am in the process of getting a new belt.

From having a quick look at it, is it as simple as moving the self adjusting tensioner away from the belt, then removing it, and refitting new one?

Any special tools needed?

Any advice greatfully received.

yep - its as easy as you say and shouldn't take more than 10mins, just make sure you note down the route of the belt before you start!!!

If this is an 850 you will need a very narrow 3/4" square dive to move the tensioner.
Or cut a bit of flat steel to go diagonally across the square and use an adjustable on it.
Note, you will only remove / fit the belt over the non flanged pulley.

On my T5 the adjuster has a small lug with a hole in it that lines up with another hole in the base plate when the adjuster is fully retracted. You can insert a suitably sized Allen key (about 4mm I think)in these holes to hold the adjuster away from the belt whilst you feed the belt onto the pulleys.

I did my T5 recently and a friend who has a garage welded a small suare of metal onto a rod and bobs your uncle, also as previously said a small broken drill bit to keep it up until changed.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

You were right, easy to remove belt, and then tensioner, the only problem ive found is......

My local garage have given me the wrong belt (Gates), as its shorter than the Volvo one ive removed......

So i guess the belt must be wrong, as the original is a Volvo one.

Volvo did change the routing of the belt to give more grip on the alternator pulley. The new belt is a different length from the original (but not by much). Has you're got a/c ? If you send me a PM I'll email you a belt routing diagram.
