Default Stiff coupling. Is it faulty?

Hello,

The overrun on my 1997 Elddis seems very stiff. Even if I remove the damper completely from the mechanism I have to apply considerable force to push the coupling head in or out.

I stripped it down fully and cleaned and re-greased everything nicely but it still takes quite an effort to push the shaft in or out. I understand that the damper should exert sufficient force to cause the coupling head to extend slowly out by itself if everything is OK but my shaft is way too stiff for this to happen. I'm pretty sure the damper is OK because I compared the resistance required to compress it with a brand new one and it seemed the same.

Does anyone know how stiff the shaft should be in the housing when the damper isn't fitted? Is this normal?
