Thanks bob, are there any ways of knowing if the fuel pump is working or not? I know the one in the fuel tank is, so if anything it will be the high pressure pump! I would rather not spend out on something like that unless I know for sure that's the fault! Is it an electric pump? Can't really work it out from looking at it!

cheers

Are you certain the in tank pump is working correctly ? This is the least reliable of the two pumps , the high pressure mechanical pump on the engine rarely fails . There are a lot of posts on the 163bhp D5 pumps not surprisingly due to most of them being around 10 years old but not so many on the 185 D5 which is a slightly different fuel system but you can still test it the same way . A 163 D5 engine will start and run with a completely failed in tank pump but the 185 D5 engine will not . Try and have the codes read using DICE or VCT2000 , generic code readers can be misleading on Volvos

inlet swirl loom loose? the actuator? the wiring loom?

either way that's likely what's caused your map code, ' range/performance' or whatever else the description was, not likely shooting the messenger will fix your cut out non start condition I'm afraid.

if you suspect fuel delivery, and you want to try doing this without garage assistance you'll need a spare day and to make yourself a "leak off kit" , you should find examples of this on this site or by googling it, a multimeter will help, also a scanner/code reader with live data would be a distinct advantage.

ok, so fitted new map sensor... not that. Perhaps time to bite the bullet and just replace fuel pump! But before doing that I will just check the in tank pump!

ok, so after checking to see if the tank pump was working (i removed the inlet hose to the hp pump and turned ignition on to not the fuel being pressurised), I then removed the high pressure pump to inspect....

I found that the shaft is pretty much completely seized so I am guessing it is a bearing which has gone. I am sure these shafts should be free spinning!? It appears it is driven off the camshaft, so I guess was putting too much load on the engine which has been causing it to cut out.

I shall keep you posted when I receive the new pump tomorrow (£330 later)

Talking Problem Solved!

So, new high pressure fuel pump fitted, new swirl valve actuator fitted and runs like a dream!

The reason for cutting out was the fuel pump and not the actuator, but that needed replacing too in my fault finding. I hope this thread is useful to somebody one day!
