240 General: 1984 245 making whining noise when below half tank

I've got myself my first car!! ... and I'm trying to look after it!

When the beast is below half a tank of petrol or so it produces an annoying whining noise which I suspect has something to do with the fuel pump hmm... I don't really know that much about fuel lines and such.. I'm going to replace the fuel filter with a nice new bosch but I'm not sure if that'll do the trick, really I want to know if I don't have to replace the fuel filter because I'm not sure how cheap or easy that is!

It could be a fuel pump issue BUT it wouldnt hurt to change the fuel filter if you dont know when it was last done. Its not a hard job to do but you will get some petrol spillage so keep some rags handy.

Im not sure if your car will have two fuel pumps (in tank and external under the passenger rear floor on a bracket under the car) and one might have seen better days (possibly the in tank pump) Its not hard to cahnge, just a fiddly job.

This guide shows you how and mentions that usually when the in tank pump gives up, the main pump ahs to work harder and that could be your noise.

I think Australian market 240s were all fuel injected by 1984. The squealing main pump under half a tank is a classic sign of a failed in-tank pump or a split fuel hose inside the tank. Neither makes the car undriveable but both will shorten the life of the main pump which is quite expensive to replace. The link linked above is a great guide to sorting it out!

Sounds like fuel pump straining due to breather pipe blockage. Does pump click lots when not even full?

yes you need to get in the tank and look at the pump on the fuel sender it was a fairly common problem in the 240's day .

I'll have a look at that, and I'll pop in a new filter asap..

also I describe the car as mine and well.. it pretty much is but that's when I get my liscence in a few months in the mean time it's my parents and I'm trying to make it as nice as I can..

So far it's on it's 3rd M47 (try finding a good one of these in the island of Tasmania) and my dad and I have got the o/d going again after 3 years due to a bad knob, connection and solder joins in the relay
The mechanic has popped in new rear springs and diff after too much towing
The injectors are essentially new after being swiped from our dead '79 244 and new round seals
The hoses on the cold start valve and top radiator have been renewed (from that 244 that keeps giving)
New head gasket
The bushes are new
rear wiper motor repaired
countless maintenance jobs like coolant etc..
And many other things which I cannot remember off the top of my head..

Another question however about timing belts! yay :/

when the car was bought in 2004?ish.. it had about 114,000 kms (not miles, and it's an '84) and the timing belt was redone around then I think.. now in 2014 it's just gone over 250,000 now I'm 1/4 of the way to my 1,000,000 km target..! but the question is: when should this be replaced again?

p.s can't wait to see that t5 roar

I believe that the recommendation is 50,000 miles (so about 80K km) or 5 years, whichever comes first. I think the later round tooth type are supposed to last 100K miles, but still only five years. It may last considerably longer, but don't count on it. I have no idea how long mine has been in though (86K miles, 25 year old car)... it's something I really must get round to.
