A tip for anyone if the car's windscreen washers stop pump..
I'm posting this in case it's useful to someone in the future:
My 740 estate had developed an apparent appetite for requiring the windscreen washer container to be refilled every few days. This culminated in no spray coming out of the front or rear jets, even when the container was, apparently, full. The fault was this: Volvo fit a mesh filter that sits under the filler tube and at the top of the window wash container and during the last 160k odd miles it had so silted up that when I took it out and poured fresh water in the water wouldn't pass through at all. It was u/s. I took it out and all is now 100% working again. Please note that to remove the filter all you need to do is pull up and remove the filler feeder tube and then remove the big black rubber seal that it pushes into on top of the container. The water filter will then be easily removed. Possibly Volvo stock a replacement, I've not check yet. I've posted this because it was only after removing the air filter and the water container (not too big jobs in themselves) that I realised the job was even more simple and you don't even require a spanner or hammer. HTH someone in the future. Charles.

Hi,
Giving that filter a wash every 3rd or 4th fill is recommended as they do tend to clog up easily. But being nylon, they clan up easily.. Keeping an eye on the actual bottle when you fill up helps to ensure that you do have some screen wash in there. You'll see the water coming up to the top of the bottle. Especially if you have some coloured screen wash.. Des. . .

And the biggest culprit for clogging filters and non return valves is washing up liquid, DON'T USE IT.

Hi All,
I cleaned my washer pump filter by carefully cutting off the 'lid' with junior hacksaw. When clean & dry, glue (superglue) the 2 halves back together. The amount of gunk was amazing...no surprise they weren't working. Rich |
