Yes mate, do a search on the forum this has been a perennial problem. I fixed mine with wd40 and judicious wiggling of the key, not me. Worth a go, cheap and easy!

Thanks everyone

The wiggle and lubrication method didn't work for me, so I went for the loosening the baseplate method, which worked. I was going to use it as an excuse to buy a Dremel, which I've always wanted, but managed it with a careful bit of hammer and chiselling

I might buy a second hand ignition barrel and have a go to remove the lock cylinder as practice and then swap over with my lock if it fails again.

My next task is to work out why volvo have nothing on my VIN so therefore can't provide me with a replacement key/remote or radio codes (for if I choose to replace my Japanese minidisc version of the HU-850 that can only receive one radio station - radio 2)

When I had my Mitsubishi Pajero I had the same issue and this was a nice cheap work round.

I am so sorry for my tardy reply. I did indeed Dremel the mother then got medieval on it's ass with a chisel.

You do indeed need a Dremel in your life, just steer well clear of the Ebay 1 spin attachments.

Many thanks

There is indeed something medieval about mucking about with a hammer and chisel in a pristine luxury car interior environment... But it worked!
Dremel on the Christmas list though..

Thanks for advice, do you rate the frequency adapters, I always thought they might not be that good..? (only because they are quite cheap to buy but if they work well, then all the better..)

I in fact bought a second hand british HU-850 and intend giving it a go on a rainy weekend but am worried about the software coding issues. I wonder if I went back to the original after that then would it be OK or am I just opening a can of worms?
