Welcome,

When you say the top pipe was destroyed in oil how much oil was there. As said these cars do leak out of the rubber O ring seal in the shut off valve, see Bafflers guide here http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=114946. Both my diesels have had a bit of oil in this pipe, not a lot but a bit. If you stand the pipe up on its end you might get a very small amount which has run down.

There are more guides on removing the turbo, egr valve and inlet manifold in the Articles section if you need.

The diesels in these models are fairly easy to work on and loads of help on here. I recently bought a replacement v40 diesel and had a seized EGR valve which led to replacing the inlet manifold and removing the turbo and also a leaking fuel injector.... didn't expect either so I feel your pain!

Reusing the old pipe is bad practice, as a build up of varnish in the pipe can restrict oil flow. This causes the oil to back up on itself, and it has nowhere to go but past the turbo seals. Refitting a turbo incorrectly can cause the symptoms you describe. The new turbo is probably fine, but the pipework needs checked.

Also have a look at your air filter. When was it last changed? A blocked or heavily restricted air filter can cause oil leaks at the turbo.
Surprise Suprise your man wont get back to me who sold the car amd my own mechanic is on holidays for the bloody week... the air filter was a disgrace, its the first thing i did when i got the car home, new oil, oil filter and air filter, now im pretty sure i filled it as close to full 5.4L (is that right?) and drove it down to waterford from dublin bout 110 miles and checked it next day was down to the 3rd notch....

like am i right in thinking, when i was looking at the car first and it hadnt been drivin the old oil from the old turbo blowing hadnt quite made it up to the inlet hense no smoke when i was buting it, and then when i was drving it more, it just started to get sucked up? like im praying to jebus its not rings or valve stems... and if it was wouldnt it be continously the same and not just on and off, heavy smoke week smoke, should it be quite uniform if its that internal?

Pics are always good. Before you start any work, clean everything as best you can then take the car for a drive. When you get back the source of the leak should be more obvious. Your lower intercooler hose jubilee clip is likely to be badly rusted, so you may need to fit a new one after removal. Just make sure you have a container under the hose to catch any oil. Losing the amount of oil that you did is excessive for a 110 mile journey.
