2011 XC70 TF-80SC Transmission fluid confusion
Hi Guys!
I want to flush my transmission fluid on my 2011 Volvo XC70 . From the model year 2011 Volvo has upgraded the TF-80SC transmission to Generation II. After this update the recommended oil also changed based on VIDA to a low viscosity one: TF-80SC Model Year -2010 Generation I - 1161540 & 1161640 TF-80SC Model Year 2011 Generation II - 31256774 & 31256775 I'm planning to replace these unreasonably expensive Volvo oils to other brands. As the transmission produced by Aisin Warner (owned by Toyota) I found the followings: https://www.be.aisin-europe.com/en-g...autofluids/atf - Aisin Premium ATF 6 (Compatible with 4-5-6 gears and the Gen I standard 1161540 ) - Aisin Premium ATF 6+ FE (Compatible with 7+ gears and JWS 3324 and Toyota WS which is probably 31256774 , but no Volvo reference in the data sheet) I'm also asked the official Aisin support and they recommeded the ATF 6 oil which is confusing. What I know that the two type of oil are not mixable. Has anybody used one of these oils on his/her GEN II TF-80SC transmission? If you guys can recommend me other alternatives I would be very happy. Thank you in advance, Last edited by vogron; May 24th, 2019 at 15:17. |

Looking at the spec sheets, then it’s the ‘6+’ you would want. The Volvo AW1 spec oil is extremely high quality (hence the price), with low viscosity (~26) but very high shear index (~170). I don’t know for sure who makes it, but I suspect as its made in Canada, that it’s PetroCanada.
You have loads of options for AW-1/jws3324 spec. I’ve been using this: https://www.smithandallan.com/produc...mission-fluid/ My box needed quite a few dumps to clean up, and is essentially still a work in progress hence I got the 20L drum. |

Thank you for your fast reply.
Based on the data sheets the simple ATF 6 which is "AW-1 & JWS 3309" and the ATF 6+ FE is "WS & JWS 3324". So I still don't know which is the correct standard for GEN II the AW-1 or the JWS 3324. |

The official correct spec is AW-1. I believe JWS3324 is essentially the same spec, differing by name.
Many fluids are made to the above spec, but have surprisingly high viscosities (owing to the complexity and cost of producing fluids with low viscosity which provide high shear stability) compared with the official Volvo stuff. Look for a low viscosity option, ie with similar spec to the one I linked above, as the gearbox is programmed via the Volvo software to operate with a low viscosity fluid. I believe AW-1 is a slightly lower viscosity fluid and the main reason for the change is economy reasons.
From MY12 Volvo switched from JWS3309 to AW-1 for all models except XC90. The information already supplied gives you a number of good options, but there is no harm in using either so long as a full flush is done.

Regarding the viscosity of the oils: The Volvo OEM oil (31256774): viscosity @ 40C: 25.1 viscosity @ 100C: 5.6 viscosity index: 174 Tested by a russian company: https://www.drive2.com/o/b/482952512115049038?page=0 Aisin ATF6+ FE (JWS 3324/Toyota-WS): viscosity @ 40C: 29.6 viscosity @ 100C: 5.9 viscosity index: 149 As far as I know now my box filled with the volvo OEM and I'm afraid a little bit of mixing the two oils due to the three time flush procedure is changes "only" the 75-80% of the old oil. |
