Default Advice on tdi noisy vac pump and fix..

hi my v70 tdi had a noisy vac pump.... we all know what its like... its like a bad tappit that comes and goes.

what irritated me off was every time i asked about the vac pump being noisy, everyone just folded up and said buy a new one and i wasnt having that.

so as well as doing a few other jobs, i took the vac pump off to either inspect it and see if it could be fixed, or be not able to fix it and be pleased that id had a look. anyway.....
i managed to get it of (cos to get to the bottom bolt is that bad you need the hands of a bevarian midget and bob the builders tool to get to it).
then when its off, you notice a huge spring on the inside and you panic a bit .dont worry!...then i undid the torx screws on the top plate to have a look....wel after taking the top late off, i found nothing.. well nothing that looked like it was fixable anyway so i carried on..i then decided that the spring had to be released to have a proper look inside so i did that..( nasty job and i used a socket on the spring end and a air ratchet gun on the small bolt on the pump side) to get it off.. THE SPRING IS UNDER A DECENT AMOUNT OF TENTION!!!!!. so go careful.
then i noticed that as i spinned the pump, i could hear a gritty sound that made me think that there was stuff behind the pump and stopping it from going right back in its seat and hence causing the tapping on the cam!..
after i took the pump out and cleaned it, i put it back and there was no "gritty" noise when i spun the pump in its housing and i then put it back together by compressing the spring and getting the nut back on the pump side...THIS IS A HARD JOB AND TOOK TWO OF US TO COMPRESS THE SPRING!.....after all that i put it back together and hey presto... no more tapping at all!... sounds like new.

hope this helps!

sorry i didnt take any piks.........
