Default 1991 240 estate fuel filter

Hi,

Is it to be found under the bonnet or underneath the car next to the fuel tank or somewhere else ?

Thanks, James

Look under the car forward of the nearside rear wheel, and you'll see a bracket/cradle holding the external pump and filter.

Default Thanks Jim

You've confirmed what I feared - ie it's not exactly a DIY job to replace the filter.

I had read that some 240's had the filter fitted in the engine bay but then volvo switched them back to where you're saying, so mine is one of those !

Many thanks for your help

Not exactly a straightforward job but it's not the hardest thing to do in the world, just a bit fiddly. If you've got a good set of tools and you're mechanically inclined it should only take a few hours.

The fuel filter is next to the right hand side bonnet hinge. No crawling about under the car required.

It depends on the model, I think.
On the LH 2.4 system, B200F or B230F, it is under the nearside rear seat as described.

It's not that difficult to do, but you do need really good unworn spanners, as the bolts holding the fuel onions are thin and will be very tight.
There's a procedure for releasing residual fuel pressure in the line, but I didn't bother with that. I got the union bolt just free, then wrapped a cloth round the pipe and undid it.

Remove the whole pump/accumulator chassis and then separate on the bench.

I had a rusty banjo joint. There was a constant faint smell of petrol, but nothing visible except under pressure.
To get the plastic pipe off pour a bit of hot water over it first.

What clifford said! A '91 should be LH2.4 injection.

Ah, fair point- I assumed it would be a k-jet car for some reason.

Anyway, for the original poster, it’s not that hard a job although you’ll need decent spanners, as others have said.

Default Thanks very much gentlemen ....

for your considered advice.

My 240 is indeed the LH- Jetronic 2.4.

I've owned the car for 10 years, though it had been sitting in my garage for the past 6. I decided in the Autumn to have it taken by trailer to the nearby independent volvo specialists for MOT.

I'm sure that you won't be surprised to hear that it passed - though with 3 or 4 advisories which have since been addressed.

Anyway it's back on the road looking great !

It has several non - MOT issues which I'd like to sort out myself, hopefully helped by advice from members of the forum.

I'm daunted by the fuel filter replacement job so will get it done professionally.

Thanks again,

Mike

Why do you think it needs a new fuel filter?
I did replace one once because after 300,000 miles I thought it was probably the sort of thing that needed to be done once in a while. It didn't make any difference - the car continued to run perfectly.

Actually it is only incidentally a filter. It's main function, I understand, is as a fuel accumulator - a reservoir that evens out fuel supply pressure, although I don't really understand its function. I wonder if it might account for that occasional brief burst from the pump when you first turn on the ignition - just refilling the accumulator?
