My only comment about tap water would be, that whether you live in a hard water or soft water area, you will still have some sort of mineral deposits build up (check your kettle). Distilled water or ready mix would be the ideal way to go IMO.
Thanks. I don't dispute that you do get mineral deposits with tap water, but bearing in mind 50% is not tap water and from my long experience with one engine you don't need to let using tap water concern you too much. Bob.

I have just sent a message direct to Comma asking why they have changed their recommendation from G48 to G64, but won't get a reply until Monday. I see from the tech data that G64 is still Ethylene Glycol based. Bob

So many bl**dy products these days it gets on my wick ! Bad enough with all the Ebay replacement Mickey Mouse parts now there's about 47 million different choices of antifreeze, gearbox oil and gawd knows what else!

I can see why people go the dealers as it's a lot easier ! downside is the price !

Hello

I was told that the pink stuff was the best, as it lasts longer, would be interested to know what the difference in colours is, I put pink in my car and if its not compatible will need to get it out.

Thanks

I buy antifreeze delivered from a dealer. The price is good. And no time or effort wasted messing about trying to find a bargain alternative saving how much or possibly paying more.

Whatever water area, I am not convinced against tap water. And remember, a kettle boils the water evaporating water off leaving residue in the kettle, day in day out time after time. Does your car's cooling system do that?

Ready mixed is available yes, including from Volvo dealers.

P.S. I always drain coolant in to a container so far as that can be achieved, for disposal at a disposal facility.

Ah, now you have opened up the discussion!! In days of old manufacturers had their own colours for antifreeze, but it's more standardised these days, usually blue/green for ethylene glycol based products (not sure what make/designation your pink is?). Ethylene Glycol based antifreeze is suitable for red block engines.

The thing to remember is NEVER mix Ethylene Glycol based antifreeze with the modern 'red' OATS (Organic Acid (Additive) Technology) antifreeze (Google it for more info). You will not have a running engine within hours as it will turn the coolant to thick sludge and destroy all your engine seals and gaskets!! If you must use it thoroughly drain and repeatedly flush the engine and heater matrix, but basically don't even think about it.

I guess you must be safe as you must have had your 'pink' in for a while now. The container will tell you its base .

Bob.

I am starting to twitch violently about Comma's change of website recommendation from their XStream G48 antifreeze to XStream G64 as being suitable for the old 'red blocks'. I now see the information on the website says G64 is "specifically designed for modern downsized engines ... " , AND although Ethylene Glycol based, the product description mentions "containing an inhibitor package based on ..... and silicate (Psi-OAT coolant)".

Until I receive some clarification from Comma, I would suggest you do not even consider mixing Comma XStream G64 with existing coolant in your car.
