problem
help required ! bought a 10 year old 2.4 twin turbo deisel,
It has an annoying problem, ( short history )....been to 4 garages so far , pressure accumulating in coolant and small coolant leak, First garage says air lock, and ran with coolant reservoir open, that was not the problem, 2nd garage could not find leak, 3rd garage phoned me to say the water pump was leaking ,...changed it along with the timing belt, but says pressure in the coolant was head gasket, spoke to very helpful volvo scrap guy who said it was unlikely to be the head gasket and put me onto garage 4 who tested coolant and ruled out head gasket problem, gave it to them for 2 days to investigate but after much head scratching ( and nothing taken off/apart ) someone stared at an open bonnet and and gave up, has anyone had a similar problem ? ? and can give me some advice. regards george |

D5s do sometimes suffer from head gasket failure, so it can't be ruled out.

I'd re-post this in the forum section relevant to your model year, you may get a better response. Is the temperature gauge indicating where it should once up to temperature and staying steadily there? It could be something as simple as a faulty cap on the header tank.

Id be suspicious when they told you the water pump was leaking. That is all but unheard of on the D5. The original is an over engineered, high quality unit with SKF bearings
Was it a genuine Volvo water pump they fitted? Pattern ones have a poor rep on these engines... Also, Im presuming they replaced the aux belt at the same time? Its critical that only a genuine Volvo belt is used. Pattern ones, even from some supposedly quality manufacturers, are prone to breaking and when they do they can gather up the timing belt, with disastrous consequences. Id be inclined to find a proper Volvo specialist, not simply an indy garage, of which there aren't that many. Wither that or a dealer. No one else knows the engines better, and no one else has access to any service bulletins concerning the engine and advising of any unsual symptoms or behaviour with the unit.

I agree with Familyman 90.
As Familyman 90 says above.
Notwithstanding that the water pump MAY have been leaking. It’s not possible to see the water pump without dismantling so is the garage trustworthy enough to believe that they have actually done the job?

thanks ( concrete ) that is exactly the same problem as i have, Every other night i crack open the the reservoir cap to release a small amount of pressure,
I keep an eye on the coolant level, if i forget for a few days i think the pressure inside the reservoir pushes the level down slightly, Enough to trigger the warning on the dash, I very seldom have to top up the coolant, I am so relieved to hear that it might not be the dreaded H gasket thanks again regards George |

Find a mechanic who knows what he is doing. If there cooling system is pressurising there is a very simple test can be done to see if it is the head gasket leaking (i.e. combustion gases entering the water).
Crap video but shows how simple it is : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfJu9DC01Z4
