Default HELP - MEGABUCKS REPAIR FOR OIL LEAK

My 1995 850 2.5 has had a persistent oil leak and I am told it is the rear crankshaft oil seal that is the culprit. I am also told that this is a £400 repair. Is this right and, if so, what else could they do at the same time while they've got the engine out as the car is approaching its 80,000 service. Should I ask for them to do the repair and service at the same time? Any advice would be really appreciated.

IIRC To replace the rear crankshaft oil seal you have to remove the gearbox and / or lift the engine. This is where the mega bucks comes in. Sorry.

Hi Steve,

The fact that they will be splitting the gearbox from the engine is why it's costing so much. The seal is behind the flywheel so you can imagine the man hours it's going to take to get in there. If I were you I'd have the whole clutch replaced while the g/box is out, that's if it hasn't been done anytime recently? Have the usual fluids renewed too...

Best of luck...

Hi ya,

I never thought of having my seal done when my clutch was done, but the price of the clutch job is £600 quid. So therefore it want be much more for the seal job.

They had my car two days sas its an 8 man hour job for the clutch, they drop the engine out with the subframe and split it.

Have them check the lower engine mounts, The CV joints as these are disconnected and your anti-roll bar etc etc.

Mark.

I was only quoted £350 for a full new clutch fitted at Bromleys (independant Volvo place) in Chorley, Lancashire. This was for the same brand of clutch as supply Volvo for genuine parts. If I remember correctly it was about half parts and half labour. In the end I had the clutch done a couple of months later when I was forced to buy the new engine..... :-(

Bad luck :-(

Funnily enough had my rear crankshaft seal replaced last week and a new clutch fitted whilst it was all out. Still had a slight leak but I tracked this down to needing a new O ring on the dipstick.

Hi all,

I'm having my clutch done soon so I think I'll do the seal while it's out. Anyone have the P/N for the seal?
