Registering LPG
Had the lpg conversion done at the weekend, now I'm trying to fill in the V5C (logbook). What should be wrote? Dual Fuel, LPG Petrol or what tried getting in touch with DVLA and can't get to talk to anyone, the lines are busy and there's no queuing system. Been on tinternet , can only tell me that I have to notify them, so no help there. Can anyone tell me what the procedure is? Thanks.

DVLC registering re LPG
Turn up with the vehicle to the nearest DVLC office.
Present current VEL disc, + conversion certificate. You will get a new VEL, and a new log book will come back from Swansea in due course + a rebate (£6.25p in my case!) Your taxation class will be ALTERNATIVE FUEL CAR (X in blue Category 4) Your fuel will be GAS BI-FUEL (Category P3 in blue section 4) How do I know - got my V5C back this morning! Bhowani V50 LPG |

Thanks for the info. My nearest office is 30+ miles away, I was going to ride there on my scooter, I wouldn't of been happy having to go all the way home again, didn't realise they inspect the car.

Lpg & dvlc
Interesting point about whether they need to SEE the vehicle. I went twice to the Leeds Office (not a bit distance). First time got some one to run me there (lazy) and didn't have the vehicle or VEL with with. Was told they needed both, so went back with the lot when it suited me, some 6 weeks later. On second visit no mention made of whether I needed to bring the vehicle!
Think of the rebate! Bhowani V50 LPG Last edited by Bhowani 2; Sep 20th, 2010 at 15:18. Reason: Up[date! |

Phoned the local DVLA and enquired as to what the procedure is as I had to change the tax from plg to disabled as well. I was told to write "BI FUEL" in the new type of fuel and disabled into the relevant place on the V5C (logbook) and take all the relevant paper work to a post office that does tax discs. I was then told "The post office will send the V5C and a photocopy of the proof of conversion on to the DVLA and we will make the relevant changes and send you the new amended V5C".
All went smoothly at the post office, I got the new disabled tax disc, then the lady hands me my V5C back with the rest of the paper work, Thinking she hadn't realized I ask "Don't you forward this on to the DVLA?" The lady informed me that it is my responsibility to send it back. So I now have a tax disc which says "disabled" and a V5C which says PLG. I have a feeling the V5C will be returned to me as the change from plg to disabled has to be done at the time of re-taxing the vehicle. Anyhow I don't have to take Black Betty to the local DVLA for the change from petrol to BI FUEL. That's all I came on to say.

DVLC registering re LPG
Glad you got it sorted.....it's amazing how so called "set-procedures" vary.
Anyroad it is good that you are within the LPG fold! Look forward to seeing your Black Betty sometime! Bhowani V50 LPG Last edited by Bhowani 2; Sep 22nd, 2010 at 08:29. Reason: Syntax |

The local DVLA office sent my V5 back, informing me that the PLG can only be altered when re-taxing (I knew it was too easy). I phoned DVLA Swansea and informed them of my predicament. I was told to send the V5, along with the proof of Bi fuel certificate, to Vehicle Customer Services (VCS) at the DVLA Swansea SA99 1BA . This helpful person told me, the local office should of forwarded the documents to them and not sent them back to me.
I now await the V5 returning with the fuel change and taxation class being amended. Either that or another spanner will be thrown in the works.

Mine's registered as PETROL/GAS.
I just filled in the change of fuel section and posted it to the DVLA. They didn't need a certificate - I haven't got one anyway as it was converted years ago in Holland, all I have is an invoice from the installer. |

Is there much point in re-reistering the vehicle if there's such a small difference in duty (£6 ish from what I've seen on this post ?) apart from it being exempt from the London congestion charge ?
I've recently got a LPG C70 & had hoped there might be a better discount on the duty - the car didn't come with an instalation certificate which I'm currently chasing (without much success !) with Optimus in Leicester who I'm told installed it. Cheers, John. |

I think that you're legally obliged to notify the DVLA of an LPG conversion, and to make sure that the V5C has the correct details - including the fuel type.
I guess the risk is that if Plod do a spot check you might have some explaining to do. Worse than that, if you ever had a bump, you might run into insurance difficulties if the vehicle details aren't correct. I seem to remember all I did (it was 6 years ago) was send off the V5C to Swansea with a covering letter, and then got the new document back within a couple of weeks. I certainly don't recall it being a difficult process, and I certainly didn't need to take the car to the local DVLA office. Cheers Jack |
