Default Replacing D5 S80 fuel filter - stuck!

Hi all

Currently trying to replace the fuel filter on my D5 S80 (canister type), and for the life of me I can’t get it to unscrew! I’m using a filter chain wrench to try and get it off but I’m putting so much pressure into it the metal is just digging in and about to rip it apart! I can’t even get any Wd40 onto the thread to loosen it up a bit as it’s blocked off by the damn canister!

Any tips?

Thanks

Lying on your back, directly underneath using both hands is sometimes the best way.
If it's jammed on, strap type wrenches can put the force more into the canister itself unfortunately so fit them as high up the filter as you can.

There aren't a ton of alternatives with this job.

I can't remember how much room there is around the canister but a strap wrench similar to https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Adjustabl...YAAOSwDehZnxJE might work.
Lidl sometimes sell them for a few quid (but you have to hit on when they're selling tools!).
I've found they work better on oil filter canisters than a chain or nylon strap wrench, with less tendency to slip or distort the canister.

If you can't get hold of a strap wrench easily you could try using an old aux or cam belt or even an old trouser belt clamping it tightly round the canister with a pair of pliers or pincers to exert the force required more easily.

so put the belt as high up as you can get it.

Default Cheap dedicated tool on ebay

Had the same problem. My oil filter strap wrench wouldn’t shift it.
As I change the fuel filter more often than scheduled anyway, I bought a tool on eBay.
Laser 6238, just under £20.00 delivered. Takes a 3/8 ratchet on short extension and saves mashing the plastic ribs on the filter casing.

I had no problem taking the filter housing off my S60 with the Laser 6238 but it proved nigh on impossible to screw it back on at the correct angle with the car just under axle stands - I (nor my assistant) could get the bloody thing to re-thread. Ended up getting air trapped in the fuel system when I fired the car up with the filter cross-threaded and had to be recovered to a garage where they refitted the filter with the car on a lift. Not trying it again!
