Default 240 estate wheels/tyres

Hi all,
I ordered some tyres in a hurry from Black Circle, for my '88 240 wagon on 14" wheels. They were 185/70, it was all they had in 185/14 and seeing it was a saloon size assumed they would be OK on the wagon - possibly stupidly.

But matey at the fitters saw the car has 185/80 up front and 185/90s at back and didn't want to fit the 70s, saying they'd have to stretch and that was now illegal.

So bottom line are estate rims the same width as saloon ones?
I'm not sure whether I can tell him the 70s are OK or if I should find something different.

Estate wheels are the same as saloon wheels. There is no difference. Going on about stretch is because of cool kids in their little hatchbacks stretching a 195/50 onto like a 10 inch wide rim which is dangerous.

A 70 on a 14x6" rim will be fine....but your tyre sizes should match all round. Not be mismatched.
