assuming you mean the middle one at the back , I inherited this from fvsh and before I broke something trying to fix it I decided the filter was still doing its job and there was no leakage past the element. Now I just live with it.

Mine is the same, as long as unfiltered air does not pass to the engine its ok.
Close the bonnet and it can't be seen!

I thionk Honest John mentioned it on his 'what to look for' list when buying s60's

Mike are you talking about the actual screw down lid on the air filter housing or the false cover that clips over the top of the whole lot and covers an ecu?

Mine is the 185 engine and this false clip on cover had me stumped for a while. One of the clips had dislodged and was twisted preventing reassembly.

Long Flat Blade screwdriver as your putting the lid down and prise it out! only way! pain in the a*se. I did read somewhere that the plastic distorts over age, casuing the problem!

Darryl .
mine has just the three clips at the front and three lugs at the back the top just lifts off.when you try and get the three lugs in at the back the centre one just will not go in, as the other members have said will give the scRewdriver trick a go .
thanks all

IIRC this is found on the EUIII D5. The EUIV engine has a slightly different filter box?

Mine does exactly the same. The lid of the air filter box was distorted when I bought the car. I seem to remember seeing a fix on here somewhere which involved cutting/grinding off the lugs from the middle (or maybe even all three) of the rear catches. I know I did do something which made it easier to clip the lid back in but still involves the use of a long screwdriver to make sure the clips engage properly.

Despite the lid being distorted it still seals the filter element OK.

Default Secret?

Hello, The 3 lug back-side of my 2002 petrol's air cleaner box requires alignment help from a screwdriver too. Every big plastic box under the hood of any car I've ever touched had this kind of warping. It's common to see bungee straps holding the lids of air cleaners in place where I come from. Kira

Covered at length by Honest John in his review of these models. Apparantly the box simply does not fit and its distortion prevents a seal with the lid. No doubt as the plastic gets older/more brittle it will cause further problems but in the meantime - lots of fiddle, accept the poor fit or the ubiquitious "gaffer tape trick".
