Question S80 brake upgrade

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been answered but I cannot find it
I have a 2005 S80 with the 286mm front disks. Now these are going to need renewed soon so I was thinking about upgrading to the 305mm T5 disks.
I realise I will need new callipers but are the calliper carriers all the same?

I have been unhappy with the stopping power since I got the car ( granted they could be cheap and are worn ) but it seems like a sensible time to upgrade

EDIT - also is 305mm the largest standard ones? I am running 19" alloys and will not be going smaller so there shouldnt be any issues with that.

Your calipers will be fine mate, it's the carriers and hoses that'll need changing.

Alternatively, with a little work, you can fit 336mm XC90 disks and calipers on there and it'll cost no more than the 305mm conversion if you find an ebay bargain. I got disks, calipers, steering limiter arms and pads for under 130 quid.

Oh, and they stop MUCH better than the 305mm setup.

Martin,

This seems a better still idea...... can you give me a little more info please?

Looking at prices god knows HOW you managed to get them so cheap lol

Back to the 305mm ones...... different carriers and hoses? why is the hose different? slightly longer or something?

You'll need to drill the 12mm holes in the stub axle out to 14mm to take the larger bolts the XC90 calipers use for mounting, and also drill out the holes in your steering limiter arms to 14mm. You should be able to reuse your old hoses as the nipple location is closer on the XC calipers. and that's it - no other modifications needed. Use new bolts cut to the correct length when mounting the caliper.

Yes, the 305mm hose is slightly longer.

So let me get this correct..... I need....
2 calipers
few holes
disks and pads
steering limiter arm? Why does this need changed? ( also my wheels at 19" with lowered springs rubbed so I installed spacers and no more rub. Is the rubbing the only reason? )
6 bolts?

6 bolts?
2 calipers
4 enlarged holes
Disks and pads
The XC90 doesn't come with steering limiter arms of any use on the other models so you'll need to modify yours.
17" wheels rub on P2 cars, the wheel/brake size doesn't really make any difference - they'll all rub to some extent.

4 bolts (2 on each side)

Martin your a star You've made my day in fact

I will go for 336mm ones from an xc90 - £200ish I recon for calipers, bolts, disks and pads

How did you modify your steering arm limiters? I'm not actually sure mine do anything tbh..... there very worn but the spacers are quite big - 15mm ( I have 25mm ones I bought for the back but they were far too big without rolling the arches lol )

PS, whats a P2 car? phase 2? mines an 05 so not sure.

i did a upgrade on the old v70 163 i had.
this i belive is the same set up on the s60 has yours not got 305mm or is it pr face lift.
i digress.
for the upgrde that i did to 305mm
you need.
caliper carriers.
discs and pads.
the brake hoses are long enough.
you do not have to drill any holes.
for the 320mm that i have just upgraded to from 305mm.
you need
caliper .
carriers
steering stop arm from the 320 set up
drill two holes in the hub 1mm larger its alloy.
discs and pads.
no hoses they where long enough
for Volvo 320mm discs and pads it will cost you somewhere in the region off £350 i went pagid to try them out .
hope that helps
mike

the arms are steel and hard to drill so if you can get both arm stops for the Xc90 it will save you drilling the hole larger.
you may have to do a bit of grinding. on the caliper/carrier on 336 i think
