The fast way is getting out the subframe with entire engine.
It can be done at home too, but you'll need a little crane. It's not expensive but you need experience with this. Anyway it can be pulled out from top. |

I used an indy I trust and who knows the car 'very well'. They have done the job before.

Ahhhh (sigh of relief). Got my 90 back at last, had the core plug and another seal replaced while they were at it. So in the last month ive had a service, got new front tyres, new front discs and pads, new front wishbones both sides and the oil leak fixed, along with a fresh MOT. Its not been a cheap month but oh its good to have her back, and driving beautifully once again! Especially after been alternating between my wifes Micra and daughters Fiesta for the past week!
Now i just need to renew my tax and *hopefully* the expense is over for this month.... |

So, a little update on this thread... Shortly after breathing a sigh of relief I drove to Bristol to visit friends, only to arrive and find that my car was dripping oil again/still. I called Volvo Assistance, having had the recent work done at a Volvo dealer (Bells in Northampton) and they promptly collected the car and took it to the dealer in Bristol (City Motors). They dropped me off a rental car which saw me on my way. This was a week ago today and I still have the rental car. I have just had a call from Volvo Customer Care telling me that City Motors are saying the repair that Bells did on my rear main oil seal looks fine and that they are investigating the cause of the 'new' leak. Now I must say I expected this, of course they're going to say that a) to save face and b) so they can charge me more money..... Or am I just being cynical? I refuse to accept that 3 days after spending £680 in a dealership having my engine and gearbox seperated to fix a leak, that another leak could just spring from elsewhere!? Any suggestions, could they be telling the truth, what else could it possibly be?! I need some ammunition for when they call me back to explain whatever they say they have found.

If the garage had overfilled the oil when they did the service, could this have caused the engine to spring leaks? What are the most common leaks and their causes? Pleasehelp i need ammo here.

What was the other seal
Hi,
What was the 'other' seal they replaced? could it be the main oil seal behind the flywheel ? i would imagine this might be a possible source of a leak, are you sure that its engine oil, not brake fluid (lighter honey colour) that is leaking out ? And where is it leaking from? Just trying to help ! I would suggest having a look yourself to locate where its coming from.. |

They changed the 'rear main oil seal' and the core plug, or are these one and the same thing? When the car was in originally I asked them to (and they said they would) change any other seals/gaskets that were apart at the time while they were at it, so not sure what that would be? Is there not a gasket or seal aswell between the engine and gearbox where they join together? Would that be the crankshaft seal? Unfortunately my detailed receipt is in the service book which is still in the car in Bristol so I cant check.
It was most definitely oil, nice new clean engine oil that was coming out. I stuck my finger in the puddle at the roadside to check! I couldnt tell where it was leaking from with the undertray still in place, but from what I could see poking around it seemed to be the same area as before. The thing is that Volvo Bells Northampton do have a good reputation so I dont like to think that they could do something catestrophically wrong, but the fact that in a 2 week period my car went from being absolutely fine, went into them for the annual service, after which it started leaking oil within days, so went back into them to have the oil leak repaired, AND have its MOT, and within days of picking it up is leaking again. This CANNOT be coincedence. |

This issue from 2010 sounds very similar to mine.... also cannot be a coincidence!

Hi, the crankshaft seal is different to the core plugs - i think there are two core plugs though - both should have been done ( so 3 seals in total). Plus the slave cylinder are the only things i can think of that might be leaking. If its engine oil - sounds like they might have either disturbed something else or not quite done one of the plugs properly. If you trust them - then try and discuss the findings with them showing you understand the potential areas and wouldnt expect anything else to be leaking unless yhey've disturbed something....
