Could it be the oil? We know we need the oill with JWS3309 additives but are all brands the same in other respects? I've got Carlube ATF-U currently but am thinking of trying the genuine Volvo fluid if I can get it at a reasonable price from somewhere.

Interesting you should mention the oil as that's what Peter at Charlwood Volvo mentioned when we were discussing why my XC90 seemed so much better to drive than all the others he has come in. I've always used Amsoil ATF. It's very expensive though.
However it didn't have the lag with the Volvo oil in it either.
