Register on a site like this or similar and then always check the MOT history of any car that you may be interested in before you do anything.

It will give a good idea as to the state of the car.https://totalcarcheck.co.uk/

Check everything yourself or get someone competent to do it for you.

This one caught my eye. It'll be interesting to see what it goes for.

that looks v nice .... certainly looks like it might break the 4.5K albeit it looks like its being artificially inflated to me ..... way to early for people to show their hands and quite a few low feedback bidders.

Default Johna was his name

Another XC90 bites the dust lol .... Its really ****ing me off that these traders/ dealers (i use that loosely as i think these are more Mr Delboy than Mr Delmonte) .... are so nonchalant about wasting peoples time, money and possibly lives ... I mean i explain my situation i.e. distance buying from the other end of the country ...... ask them if there are any major problems ..... they say nothing .... then i tell them i will send a mobile mechanic .... again they say nothing .... they are happy for people to waste money and time finding the problems they already bloody know about.

I am not naive .... i understand there are many AH's out there ..... I should really just give up .... but by god i am gonna find a decent runner and then bask in all its glory

Here it goes:
  • Traction control light is on dash Abs light is on dash Triangle warning light is on
  • There is a miss on the vehicle sounds like a hydraulic lifter or an injector miss will need further investigation but does not sound healthy
  • The vehicle was missing and not idling correctly had to hold the revs up to balance the missing
  • Abs light flashing on dash randomly check fault code and it's the power supply voltage to the ABS pump
  • Steering rack has small knocking sound will require further investigation
  • Some issues with the steering when you full lock it to one side it does not want to come to centre on its own maybe down to tracking
  • Slightly damp around the bottom off the dipstick suggested could be the dipstick seal worn
  • Front pads will need changing
  • Front bonnet does not stay up the shocker for the bonnet have gone weak
  • Top engine mount is worn out
  • The window buttons on the driver doors are cracked
  • Front number plate cracked
  • Headlights are cloudy
  • The fuel filler cap does not lock

Fault Codes
There were multiple .....many but he tried clearing them with these being persistent ..... possibly the other might have re-surfaced after more miles.
  1. Rear Electronic Module
  2. Brake Control Module
  3. Climate Control Module
  4. Differntial Electronic Module

Gosh, by the time you have paid for someone to go and check out the car like this 10x, it'll be virtually the price of one of the cars or well on it's way to it. You don't seem to be having a lot of luck so far.

But on the other hand, cars that are 12-15 years old are all going to have some wear, or faults..........perfection at that age of vehicle, generally over 100k miles as well, is very rare indeed.

Good luck. I consider myself relatively lucky under the circumstances to have found my XC90 locally - even if the parking brake doesn't work - as the selling dealer is paying to have it repaired at the local Volvo specialist.

What is your budget, more or less?

Very true .... but i shudder to think how much more i could have wasted on a dodgy runner ..... oh and in Monty Pythonesque accent .... "you lacky lacky barsteward .... what i would give for am XC90 with just a parking brake issue"

I had this one on my list to go and see as well - but bought the first one we viewed as it seemed to tick all the boxes. Might be worth a look, although as it is still available perhaps not.....it is a very high miler but very good spec and seems well cared for.

Lot of car for £5K (no Sat Nav though).
What worries me about that one is that the dealer happily tells us the cam belt AND WATER PUMP have just been changed. The water pump rarely needs changing and pattern water pumps don’t last as well as original ones do.

To the OP - if a dealer says cam belt and pump have just been changed, double check they’ve used genuine Volvo bits. If the dealer has done it, unless they are an independent specialist they almost certainly won’t have done. If the previous owner had it done they might have in which case that’s evidence of a car that’s been cared for.

Evidence of the auto box having had the fluid flushed and good brand matching tyres give me some confidence as well. Budget tyres are generally a good sign the owner couldn’t have cared less about the car.

Yes, I picked up on that as well. It's a very valid point.

When I changed the belt on my D5 XC70 some years ago, the Volvo pump was still perfect with 170k on it so it was left in situ.

I would only fit genuine Volvo belts and again Volvo pump of it was deemed prudent. More often than not, it's not needed.

A new aftermarket pump could well fail before the 170k miles pump that was on mine.
