Default Aw71 Gearbox wanted

Hi
I'm thinking about swapping M46 for auto, so am asking if there are any autos for sale possibly with the rest of the bits needed , pedal box, shifter and prop, or just single items I can collect for the conversion.
Many thanks

Andrew

I've got a brake pedal, the pedal box is the same you just remove the clutch pedal bracket which is separate.

I might have a clutch master cylinder blanking plate too.

Very unusual to hear someone wanting to do a manual to auto swap, may I ask why? It's a very involved job.

You'll need to swap the radiator for one with an oil cooler or fit a separate oil cooler like the 760 has.

You will need

Brake pedal
Master cylinder blanking plate
Brake fluid reservoir will need the clutch take off blanking
Oil cooler for the gearbox
Gearbox
Torque converter
Flexi plate
Gearbox crossmember
Propshaft (just the front half will do but it's better to fit a complete prop)

I think that's it, I have only done this swap the other way around so I may have missed something.

You might need to swap in an axle from an auto car as the ratio is different, the manual axle will make it rev lower at motorway speeds, so if you get an AW71L the lockup won't engage until you're going faster.

There was a 940 turbo automatic in harry bucklands scrapyard in Cheltenham a couple of weeks ago, my mate sent me a photo of it but I haven't had time to get down there, it will have everything you need hopefully.

Thanks for the list, that's really useful.
I may check on the scrap yard car, just depends how long it's going to be there.
I will message you about buying the parts you mentioned if I don't go the scrap yard way.
The reason for changing to auto was really just for the ease of driving, I am mindful though about the compromise to the performance, but now I've got the Turbo all fitted I hoping it would be ok.
Thanks again
Andrew

Have you driven a 940/740 with an AW auto box before ?? I would rather gouge my eyes out with a blunt fish knife before having a car with that box again

No I've never driven one, I've heard they can be sluggish but I was thinking that was more with with NA engines.
What is it about them you didn't like, I would be interested to know as its in my head the question about most people doing it the other way around.

Thanks
Andrew

They're painfully slow to react, you accelerate and the revs pick up and you can feel it sort of go to accelerate and then lumber in to movement after a little delay, absolutely no way I'd have one again by choice. After swapping mine to an M90 I was blown away at the difference, if yours is a turbo manual I would leave it that way as mpg and performance will go down.

Everyone is different but I really like my 1996 940 LPT automatic.

Drove manuals for about 15 years but last 15 years always an auto. 240 GLT then the 940. I'm nearly 45, so quite young!

Auto really suits the car. It isn't slow, slow and kickdown addictive. The gearbox changes down well and no turbo lag. Very relaxing to drive in traffic and can keep up with modern traffic. Mine I believe has not been modified and is 135bhp Low pressure turbo. B230FK.

Would not have a manual. No problems with having to change a clutch, manual abused more. Auto gearbox in both no issues. Usual part drain/fill.

James.

I've driven many autos but an auto 940 is terrible. One of the slowest to react and generally unsure feeling autos I've ever driven. Beyond lazy and never feels it's in the right gear at any time and takes the already poor MPG and makes it noticeably worse.

I've decided to go ahead, I've taken on board the comments, but hopefully I'm not going to regret it. I've picked up an AW71L which was working well before it was removed, I've sent it down Caerphilly to be fully refurbished. The chap is calling Andy and very helpful, specialist in Borg Warner.
I got the complete prop shaft when the parts arrive for that, the carrier, bearing boot etc, I will get them fitted , new universal joints and balanced.
I've fitted a standalone transmission oil cooler with a built in electric fan, which I am going to have operated by a thermal switch.

I will update on the progress , but I do have one question if anyone could help
Is there a bracket for the kickdown cable, before it goes on to the throttle spool, it's a K -jet
