I already paid the £400 road tax in march this year

For the record I use my car just as the maker intended i.e. on the road. The problem is that I live on the Kent / Sussex border and the roads here are shocking. This was confirmed to me by a holiday to the Brecon Beacons last month which reminded me how roads should look / feel instead of being bumpy and covered in 'spray on tarmac & chippings' instead of proper repairs.

Dave.

Hi I live in Northern Ireland and my XC has done 22,000. Like you some of the roads are poor and Ihave noticed a metallic bang from my front near side wheel when I go over a deep pot hole. When on smooth roads it is fine. My car has had the updates but to be honest haven't noticed any difference. Consumption at best is 32mpg and I am not a heavy footed person. Have any of you ever towed a horse box and if so how did the car perform on soft ground. As I have a new need to tow a horse box wonering will I need to buy a better off roader ie Discovery etc. Grateful for any advice or tips on how to improve off road capability on the xc90

It should be OK but check the weight of the horse box as the XC90 can't tow as much weight as a Disco.

Change the tyres for ones with off road characteristics. I use Vredstien Wintrac 4 Extreme's.

All the best.

Roy

Just for info, the Geartronic 09MY is also now in the 224g bracket...

Had it's 2nd year service performed yesterday at 28.5k miles and the garage advised that they had 'upgraded' the ECU in accordance with Volvo Service protocols.

All they were able to tell me about the change was it 'would help reduce the soot'. Not the most informative response I've ever had If anyone has any further details I'd like to hear from them.

More worryingly the car showed wear in the front locating bushes and these will be replaced under warranty.

Garage advised me that they were surprised by the amount of wear these bushes exhibited however the car was not dangerous in it's current state so I could have it back. Have booked int back in in three weeks time to have the work done. They are also replacing a 'swirl valve' at the same time, also under warranty.

Whilst I found the cost of the service a bit painful (GBP480) especially as nothing 'extra' was performed I'm still glad that I had it done as otherwise I'd never have found out about the faulty bushes.

Finally, like many have said before, glad the forum is back up and running .......
My 2006 D5 needs the throttle swirl valve unit replacing. Just out of warranty at 63k miles. Cost £519 + vat fitted. I think this is a bit steep - considering that that Volvo appear to be replacing this unit during the ECU upgrade!

Is the ECU upgrade for all year models?

The new XC90 register keeper (hurray.... at last) has just published, in the latest edition of the club magazine, that the ECU 'upgrade' is for 08 and 09 models.

I just had a TCM upgrade done on my 58 plate. Dunno what it is other than Throttle control module but its left me with a flat spot on take off but does seem to go better once you get it going.

Just a quick update on the ECU update as I've now put 3k miles on the XC90 since it was done.

The only difference I have noticed is that, when cold, the gearbox holds a lower gear for longer presumably to speed up engine warming.

I haven't noticed any improvement in fuel consumption, increased power, smoother delivery ... just the gearbox holding a lower gear for longer.

And I always thought that you shouldn't labour am engine / gearbox especially when it is cold, but then again, what do I know, I'm not an engineer !

That was exactly my view and discussed that in another post a while back.
My first few minutes of driving consist of some fairly steep inclines, which I hate doing with a cold engine in the morning, engine doing 2500-3000 rpm.
I usually shift to manual and select a higher gear, but because of the torque converter doesn't work well either
