Bet it's the clutch, the 2.0d's have massive torque and if not careful it's easy to slip the clutch, I've done it occasionally when accelerating hard on a dual carriage-way etc changing from 4th to 5th at 80ish, the change from 4500 revs to 2000 right where the turbo works well is too much for the clutch and it slips until you ease off. I assume the same thing would occur when towing, 320nm of torque and a big load is just too much for the clutch.

I could bring the wife around...

Seriously though, as the problem only occurs under load like pulling a caravan, it's likely to be the clutch.

Stick her in reverse with the handbrake hard on and try and drive away. Can you move or does the clutch slip easily - and does the smell come back.

You might want to get your clutch checked out - mine doesn't slip at all, even with 390Nm torque...
